Reading the right fiction writing quotes at the right time has the ability to lift you up, help you find your inner Grrr and keep going with your WIP during moments of doubt when you ask yourself, Why am I doing this? I’m wasting my time. This is hopeless.
When I’ve read back some lines from a first draft (I know. Don’t do it I hear you cry) and felt my heart sink all the way down to my toes I feel infinitely better when I remind myself of the words of successful writers who have come before:
‘The first draft of anything is shit.’
‘You only fail if you stop writing.’
‘The purpose of a first draft is not to get it right but to get it written.’
I go to Goodreads when I’m looking for a quote as they have an extensive searchable collection. But if you want to surround yourself with quotes – on your walls, clothing and jewellery there are quite a few options to help you do this.
Head straight for Etsy. I discovered their collection of literary quotes on items such as wall quotes and jewellery when I was looking for a bookish present for my daughter to mark reading 100 books at school. I found her a beautiful pin with a cat reading To Kill a Mockingbird from the fabulous Literary Emporium but also stumbled upon their great collection of wall stickers.
And jewellery. I love the idea of being able to wear words which inspire and soothe the soul such Just a glance at the ring on your finger to remind you what Oscar Wilde said, ‘With freedom, books, flowers and the moon, who could not be happy?’
Storiarts offer literary themed clothing and pillows. I definitely need a pair of their writing gloves. I'm adding these to my Christmas list. No more cold fingers when I’m typing.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for the are sites where you can having your favourite fiction writing quotes put on to a whole heap of products.
We’ve already mentioned Etsy. Another great site is Zazzle. I first used Zazzle after deciding I wanted my daughter to have something on the wall to inspire her.
After watching an episode of Oprah Winfrey where she quoted the Wizard of Oz and talked about the significance of one of the lines in her own life I knew it was the perfect choice.
The line Oprah famously mentioned belongs to Glinda the Good Witch who says, ‘You’ve always had it my dear. You’ve always had the power.’ What an empowering thing to know.
I found a picture of Glinda the Good Witch and Oz on Zazzle and then edited it to include the quote. Here is the result which has been hanging on my daughter's wall for five years now:
We hope you enjoy filling your own world with quotes and would love to hear what treasures you find.
